ego eimi – Jehovah

Isaiah 41.4:

Who has acted and done this, Summoning the generations from the beginning? I, Jehovah, am the First One; And with the last ones I am the same.” (NWT)

Isaiah 43.10:

“You are my witnesses,” declares Jehovah, “Yes, my servant whom I have chosen, So that you may know and have faith in me And understand that I am the same One. Before me no God was formed, And after me there has been none. (NWT)

Isaiah 43.25:

I, I am the One who is blotting out your transgressions for my own sake, And I will not remember your sins. (NWT)

Exodus 3.14

So God said to Moses: “I Will Become What I Choose to Become.” And he added: “This is what you are to say to the Israelites, ‘I Will Become has sent me to you.’” (NWT)

 

Analysis

 

The people Jesus spoke to were Greek speakers, and studied the Greek version of the Hebrew scriptures – called the Septuagint

 

In all of the passages above, the Septuagint used the isolated phrase “ego eimi” to refer to Jehovah

 

In John 8.58 and 13.19 the listeners would have heard Jesus using the same name for himself as was used for Jehovah

 

For this he was attacked for blasphemy, as they saw that he claimed to be God
